Minority business winner touts community teamwork

Luciano Hernandez, honored Wednesday as Minority Business of the Year by the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce, sees the value in teamwork, whether as workers in a company or diverse members of the community.

“We’re dependent on each other more than ever before,” he said when asked about relationships between ethnic groups. “If we’re going to survive, we have to be collaborative.”

Industrial design business Tiger Studio named 2010 Minority Business of the Year

ZEELAND — Luciano Hernandez calls his industrial design business Tiger Studio with the motto “Passion-Driven Design.”

The words “tiger and passion” also could be applied to Hernandez who came to Michigan from Texas at age 6 as a migrant worker. He went on to earn two design degrees, open several businesses and make a run for the Michigan House of Representatives over the past 20 years.

Local expertise passed to Nicaraguan students

Holland — Professors and professionals are sharing West Michigan expertise with students and universities in Nicaragua.

A group of professors, including marketing professor Paul Lane from Grand Valley State University’s Lakeshore campus in Holland, and five professionals from Tiger Studio in Zeeland, traveled to Nicaragua in late July to work with Nicaraguan university students.

Creating products of the future

Industrial design is literally the cross between art and engineering, Luciano Hernandez says.

“We’re passionate about design, but it’s about inventing new things and making our clients successful in the products we design — about creating jobs, creating new markets,” said Hernandez, principal at Tiger Studio, an industrial design firm in Zeeland.
